In 1945 the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland sent two men to America to search for land that some of their residents could emigrate to America to escape the lack of jobs in their native Glarus. Nicolas Duerst and Fridolin Streiff found and purchased 1,280 acres of land that is now New Glarus. It is said that the land reminded them of their native Switzerland.

Adlai Stevenson
