Birchwood is named after the large amount of birch trees in the area. Birchwood was originally named Loomis after Wilbur Loomis, one of the first residents and the first shopkeeper. Birchwood was first platted in 1901. The name was changed to Birchwood due to a political argument. Birchwood is known as the "Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin".
